ABC's Of Pool Ownership

Welcome to pool ownership. With over 45 years of experience, we can say with certainty that owning a pool is the most rewarding and beneficial purchase you’ll ever make. Now that you own a pool, lets learn how to take care of it. A pool doesn’t require as much care as a baby, but it does require some attention. Without getting overly detailed, there are a few KEY thoughts to remember about pool maintenance. Apply the following steps when caring for your pool and you’ll have many years of crystal clear swimming. Here’s our ABC‘s of pool care.. 1. Aggravation is Advised. Remember, if any pool of water sits with no one using it, bacteria and algae begin to grow. This is because microscopic organisms are all around us. They live on the top layer of our skin, rest on our pets, and even float in our air. All they need is a nice place that allows them to grow and multiple. If your pool will not be used for several weeks, it might be a good idea to drain it. Another option which most people choose is to use a automatic pool sweeper. Sweepers move through the water and clean the sides of the pool and also remove any debris from the pool‘s environment (leaves, bugs, pet hair). Also, make sure you clean your filter at least once a week. It doesn’t take much, take our the filter, rinse with water, and replace. This cleaning and filtering, in conjunction with the moving of the water, help deter bacteria and algae from growing. Step one is complete now on to step two. Remember… 2. Brushing prevents Build-up. Yes, in the same way you need to brush your teeth, you need to brush your pool. The reasoning behind this has to do again with bacteria and algae. Some organisms are just aggressive and will grow in the deepest parts of your pool. There they to grow relatively undisturbed by a pool sweeper and unscathed by sunlight. If left untreated, these organisms will take over your pool like ivy grows across a bridge or patio. If failing to brush can ruin a good set of teeth, failure to brush your pool can ruin a perfectly good pool. Do this at least once a week to keep that pool looking beautiful. Lastly remember… 3. Chemistry is Key. Yes, there is some chemistry involved. But don’t be afraid. A simple kit can be used to test the PH balance of your pool water. Why is this important? Well, of it this way. Our skin is delicately balanced at approximately 5.4. The higher and lower the PH the more dangerous for our bodies. This is especially true for CHILDREN. A PH of 13 for example is PH of Clorox bleach. A PH of 14 is equivalent to drain cleaner. Now, it sounds like higher PH levels are really bad, but a low PH can be just as bad. A PH of 0 for example is the PH of battery acid . Just to make this more concrete, have you ever had a cut on your hand and somehow got lemon juice on the cut? The painful burning is a direct result of the PH of lemon (a PH of 3). If that lemon juice hurts that much, imagine what swimming pool full of battery acid would be like. Ouch! Test your pool at least 3 times a week. Also, it’s important to remember that many things can change your pool PH. Did you have a huge BBQ and swim party? Check the PH. Was there a weather storm that produced a lot of rain? Check the PH. Have you been gone on a trip for a week and someone has been house sitting? Check the PH. After testing, make sure to make the necessary chemical adjustment to keep your pool perfectly balanced. These are our basic ABC’s of pool maintenance.
